André Gil Mata
Director, screenwriter, actor and director of photography (São João da Madeira, 1978). He studied mathematics and worked in photography and theater. He was curator of the Luso-Brazilian Film Festival in Santa Maria da Feira between 2001 and 2008. He founded the photography and film laboratory Átomo47 and the film production company Bando à Parte. In 2010 he was selected for the Berlinale Talent Campus. Arca d’Água, his debut film, won several awards and was selected for numerous international festivals. Casa (2010) was premiered at IndieLisboa’01. Captivity was awarded the DocAlliance prize at Cannes (2013). Kako sam se Zaljubio u Evu Ras received a Special Mention in the international competition at FIDMarseille in 2016. In 2017 he directed the short film Num Globo de Neve (IndieLisboa 2017). He holds a PhD in filmmaking from film.factory in Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina, 2016). Drvo – The Tree (2018), his latest feature, had its world premiere at the Berlinale Forum 2018, with commercial release in Portuguese cinemas (2018) and in France (May 2021). His most recent medium-length film “Pátio do Carrasco” premiered in Competition at the Rotterdam Film Festival, co-produced by Rua Escura, a film cooperative he founded in 2020 in Porto.
His work has been the subject of retrospectives at the Batalha Centro de Cinema (February, Porto, 2023), the Doc’s Kingdom Seminar (Arcos de Valdevez, 2019) and the Luso-Brazilian Film Festival (Santa Maria da Feira, 2012). In 2023, the book “The Cinema of André Gil Mata: Some Light in the Darkness”, about his film work was published by the Batalha Centro de Cinema.
He is currently in post-production on his next feature film Sob a Chama da Candeia, a Portuguese-French co-production between Rua Escura and So-cle (FR), and is developing the feature films Frãcisco Dolãda and O Escapulário, all of which are supported by ICA for the writing and development of film projects.
He teaches directing at the Escola Superior Artística do Porto.
