Ivan Castiñeiras

My work as a director lies between documentary and fiction. By staging stories in which the real and imaginary universes mix, my films address geopolitical issues of borders and territoriality. They tell the story of characters “on the margins” – smugglers, emigrants, exiles, adventurers, etc. – who fall between the visible and the invisible and who reveal an unusual way of life. These narratives form a construction of individual and collective memory, where real context and myth meet to finally create a new reality, moulded by games of temporal and historical resonances.

My works, essentially film and video installations, have been shown at numerous contemporary art festivals and events – Collection Lambert in Avignon (2022) Cinemateca Francesa and Cinemateca Portuguesa (2019), Festival Internacional Indie Lisboa (2018), Pompidou Centres in Paris and Malaga (2017), Palais de Tokyo in Paris (2017), Panorama in Le Fresnoy (2015-2016), Punto de Vista International Festival (2016), DocLisboa Festival (2015-2012), Edinburgh International Festival (2013), La Alternativa International Festival (2013).

My films have won several awards such as the Holds great promise for the future Award (Edinburgh International Film Festival, 2013), CREA Award-Best Direction (Cortocircuito International Film Festival, 2016), First Work Award (Tetouan International Mediterranean Film Festival, 2 August 2016), and the Best Director Award (Tetouan International Film Festival, 2016).
