Introduction
From September 2025 to April 2026, the production company RUA ESCURA aims to stimulate the cinematic gaze and practice, through the use of 16mm film, in the city of Porto.
André Gil Mata, Cláudia Ribeiro, and Frederico Lobo will share—through film screenings and discussions, personal experiences, and exploration of photo-chemical techniques—visions and questions, both personal and universal, about cinema.
This open course draws inspiration from the cineclub past—gatherings of amateur film enthusiasts—to establish its foundational principles, opening the door for the broader community to engage in learning the art of filmmaking. With a flexible yet in-depth program, we will explore specific cases from cinema history, as well as teach the mechanics and use of 16mm cameras, sound recording, and lighting for celluloid film. The goal is to guide participants in discovering their own cinematic gaze, without adhering to dogmas, encouraging each person to find their own path — one that, in this case, is traced through cinema.
At the end of the course, each participant will be challenged to create a short film in 16mm. RUA ESCURA will provide all the necessary equipment for the shooting and post-production of the projects.
The course is free of charge and open to anyone over the age of 18, with no prior knowledge of filmmaking required. Despite being held after working hours, the course requires participants to be fully committed and actively engaged in the sessions.
